Cindy Cornell Mitchell, loving mother, grandmother, daughter, niece, and friend, peacefully departed this life on May 13, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on January 16, 1960, in Glasgow, Kentucky, Cindy spent her early childhood in Horse Cave, Kentucky before her family relocated to Louisville, Kentucky.Cindy was born to the late Occie Lambirth and Leon Lambirth.
After moving to Louisville, Cindy graduated from Westport High School. She later attended Western Kentucky University, where she became a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Cindy completed her final year at Kentucky State University and graduated.Cindy was also a baptized Jehovah’s Witness who fellowshipped in Louisville, Kentucky, and Sacramento, California. Her faith remained an important part of her life, offering her strength, guidance, and comfort throughout the years.
Throughout her life, Cindy was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to caring for her family. She worked at Mother’s Cookies, Alcan Aluminum, UPS, and later served with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Corrections as a Classification Officer. She took great pride in helping inmates gain work opportunities and ensuring timely releases.
Cindy was married to Timothy Johnson from 1981–1983 and later to Patrick J. Mitchell from 1984–1990. She and Patrick shared two children, Brandi Ruth Alexandria Mitchell and Maxwell Arthur Mitchell.
In her spare time, Cindy loved music, riding trains, lighthouses, traveling, hiking, reading, and visiting the library, which she considered her second home. She loved the arts and enjoyed attending Derby Dinner Playhouse, Shakespeare in the Park, and many cultural events. She volunteered with Jefferson County Public Schools, Wayside Christian Mission, and spent personal time helping clean Central Park and Old Louisville.
Above all, Cindy loved her family and treasured time with friends and her grandchildren.Cindy leaves to cherish her memory her children, Brandi Ruth Alexandria Mitchell and Maxwell Arthur Mitchell; her son-in-law, Olutola Gbemi Iyun; her beloved grandchildren, Sharia Monet Mitchell, Nila Jenkins Mitchell, and Lolade Folasade Iyun; and her beloved cats, Cleo, Sequioa, Corteza, and Sparkle.Though Cindy’s presence will be deeply missed, her love, kindness, and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
